Founded in 1994, Midrand High School is a well established academic secondary school which has a proud heritage, and has established a sound reputation for:
Maintaining high standards
The pursuit of excellence
The development of the intellectual, physical, social and cultural interests of our learners
Learners who have self-discipline and accept responsibility
Before 1994 there was no English-medium High Schools in Midrand, making it necessary for the children to travel great distances to get to school.
As the population of Midrand grew, there arose a pressing need for at least one English-medium High School to serve the area. As Midrand offered the most central location corner of 1st and 3rd road in Halfway gardens, was set aside for the new school.
After years of planning, the new Midrand High School opened its doors on 29 January 1994. The founding principal Mr. Algie, and a staff of eight teachers were there to greet the 220 enrolments. The school was not yet fully ready for occupation – only 9 classrooms were available, but by the end of the first week, more teachers had been employed, and enrolment was up to 269. The entry in the school’s logbook on 5th of February 1962 reads "Classes go to swim at Eastleigh School. School fund open with R62.50 banked. Permission for a secretary to assume duty."
The first few years were spent in pre-fabricated buildings surrounding dusty playgrounds. The first PTA meeting was held in the Midrand Town Hall because the school had no electricity! The Midrand Sports Club grounds were used for athletics and soccer, but already a great spirit was developing. A school uniform was designed, and the year ended with the Acting principal handing over to Mr C van der Schyff. In 1998, Midrand High produced its first Matriculants and by 2000, pupil numbers were up to 507. Site in Linksfield Road had begun, and a foundation stone was laid on 22 October 1966. The new buildings were ready for occupation at the end of the third term of 1967 but the Department was unable to help with the move. Teachers and pupils who loaded up all the furniture and goods into a fleet of trucks and vans generously loaned by the business community of Midrand, and the school moved into the sparkling new buildings over a period of two days. Midrand High School has been successfully functioning in its existing buildings since then. A swimming pool, tennis court and netball courts, driveways, pathways and carports were built with money raised by the parents.
The school currently has a computer centre with 30 computers for the teaching of CAT (Computer Applications Technology). Although we are not an e-learning school, almost 90% of our staff use laptops and data projectors during their lessons.
The school is growing exponentially. Currently built to accommodate 750 learners, the school has 1120 learners as at January 2018. There is a present staff complement of 75 including support staff.
